The U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today that U.S. airlines' systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service load factor – a measure of the use of airline capacity – fell to 83.4 percent in July, seasonally adjusted, falling after three consecutive months of growth from April to June. Seasonal adjustment allows the comparing of monthly load factors to all other months.
The seasonally-adjusted load factor fell from June (83.6) to July (83.4) because of a decline in passenger travel, measured by a 0.2 percent decrease in Revenue Passenger-Miles (RPMs), combined with growth in system capacity, measured by a 0.1 percent increase in Available Seat-Miles (ASMs).
Load factor is a measure of the use of aircraft capacity that compares the system use, measured in RPMs as a proportion of system capacity, measured in ASMs.
Trends: Seasonally-adjusted Systemwide load factor (83.4) was down 1.3 points from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (84.7) reached in October 2015. Domestic load factor (84.2) was down 2.0 points from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (86.2) reached in October 2015. International load factor (81.6) was down 1.5 points from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (83.1) reached in March 2013.
Systemwide RPMs (78.2 billion) were down 0.2 percent from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (78.3 billion) reached in June 2016. Domestic RPMs (55.0 billion) were down 0.4 percent from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (55.3 billion) reached in June 2016. International RPMs (23.2 billion) reached a new seasonally-adjusted all-time high, up 0.4 percent from June 2016 (23.1 billion).
Systemwide ASMs (93.8 billion) reached a new seasonally-adjusted all-time high, up 0.1 percent from June 2016 (93.7 billion). Domestic ASMs (65.4 billion) reached a new seasonally-adjusted all-time high, up 0.2 percent from June 2016 (65.2 billion). International ASMs (28.4 billion) were down 0.2 percent from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (28.5 billion) reached in June 2016.
Systemwide passenger enplanements (68.5 million) were down 0.7 percent from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (68.9 million) reached in May 2016. Domestic passenger enplanements (59.7 million) were down 0.9 percent from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (60.2 million) reached in May 2016. International passenger enplanements (8.8 million) were down 0.2 percent from the all-time seasonally-adjusted high (8.8 million) reached in June 2016.

Unadjusted Systemwide load factor (86.8) was down 0.6 points from the all-time July high (87.4) reached in 2015. Domestic load factor (87.2) was down 1.0 points from the all-time July high (88.1) reached in 2015. International load factor (86.0) was down 0.9 points from the all-time July high (86.9) reached in 2013.
Systemwide RPMs (90.6 billion) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 2.7 percent from the previous high (88.3 billion) reached in July 2015. Domestic RPMs (62.3 billion) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 3.2 percent from the previous high (60.4 billion) reached in July 2015. International RPMs (28.3 billion) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 1.6 percent from the previous high (27.8 billion) reached in July 2015.
Systemwide ASMs (104.4 billion) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 3.4 percent from the previous high (101.0 billion) reached in July 2015. Domestic ASMs (71.5 billion) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 4.3 percent from the previous high (68.6 billion) reached in July 2015. International ASMs (32.9 billion) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 1.4 percent from the previous high (32.4 billion) reached in July 2015.
Systemwide passenger enplanements (76.9 million) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 1.6 percent from the previous high (75.6 million) reached in July 2015. Domestic passenger enplanements (66.1 million) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 1.5 percent from the previous high (65.1 million) reached in July 2015. International passenger enplanements (10.8 million) reached an all-time monthly high for any month, up 2.4 percent from the previous high (10.5 million) reached in July 2015.
